We fitted a custom-made interior staircase in this beautiful apartment in Lyon’s vibrant Croix-Rousse district. It defines the living room and dining room in this spacious “canut” (French for “silk-makers apartment”) with exposed-beam French ceilings. We succeeded in creating a staircase that is both maintains separation while being airy, to keep light and circulation between the areas. The area beneath the staircase and the risers remain uncluttered, in simple white lacquer. Two decorative oak niches draw the eye to the living room. On the dining room side, the drawers and doors are discreet, with handholds rather than handles, with ample storage capacity. At the back of the staircase, close to the master bedroom, you’ll find a functional wardrobe. The staircase, rising to the mezzanine, has steps made of solid oak and an unstructured graphic balustrade, bringing the room to life.
